In September 1926, 13 men under Arthur Gilligan left on the first MCC tour of India and Ceylon, returning unbeaten in 34 matches.
Against a background of increasingly fragile British rule, this book tells the story of a naively-planned and gruelling tour, Gilligan soon requesting reinforcements and less cricket. Much local pride was generated by Indian cricketers, including a record-breaking innings by CK Nayudu.
Off the field, there was lavish hospitality, but also tension and controversy, which briefly threatened to end the tour prematurely. As Maurice Tate put it, although enjoyable, ‘we were not exactly on a picnic.’
