A Game Taken Seriously and A Game Divided

by Jeremy Lonsdale

The first volume of Jeremy Lonsdale’s trilogy on Yorkshire cricket, A Game Taken Seriously: The Foundations of Yorkshire’s Cricketing Power, explains how the season of 1893 became a turning point in the history of Yorkshire cricket as the county won their first Championship after years of mixed performances. The book examines how people in all parts of Yorkshire embraced cricket and provided the energy and enthusiasm to create a powerful sporting force: whether setting up clubs, playing and watching the game, or nurturing young talent, thousands contributed to making cricket popular throughout the county.

The third volume, A Game Divided: Triumphs and troubles in Yorkshire cricket in the 1920s, covers the decade when Yorkshire became one of the most successful sides in the history of the English county game – but also found themselves unpopular and the subject of trenchant criticism. Taking as its starting point the match between Yorkshire and Middlesex at Sheffield in 1924, which provoked a falling-out between the counties, the book shines a light on many of the divisions in English cricket of the time – between north and south, amateur and professional, employer and employee, and between different perspectives on sportsmanship and the style in which the game should be played.

The second volume, A Game Sustained, is available in Yorkshire Package B and all three are available in Yorkshire Package C.
