A Game Emerging and A Game Taken Seriously

by Jeremy Lonsdale

The latest volume in Jeremy Lonsdale’s series on Yorkshire cricket, A Game Emerging: Yorkshire Cricket before the coming of the All England Eleven, examines how cricket spread in Yorkshire from the 1750s to the 1840s. William Clarke’s All England Eleven first appeared in Yorkshire in 1846, helping transform the game in the north of England – yet cricket was already more popular and better developed before their arrival than is usually recognised.

A Game Emerging is the prequel to Jeremy’s 2017 book, A Game Taken Seriously: The Foundations of Yorkshire’s Cricketing Power, which explains how 1893 was a turning point in the history of Yorkshire cricket, as the county won their first Championship after years of mixed performances.
